This project focused on the conceptualization and design of a custom arcade machine inspired by the aesthetics and narrative of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The objective was to create a visually immersive product that blends nostalgic arcade culture with a bold, futuristic anime-inspired identity.

To bring the concept to life, a scaled physical prototype was crafted using modeling clay, carefully sculpted to capture the key features of the arcade's form. The model was then finished with airbrush painting techniques to simulate the final look and highlight textural contrasts, color accents, and design lines reflective of the Evangelion theme.

Key Insights:

Theme integration matters: Strong visual storytelling aligned with the Evangelion universe significantly enhanced emotional engagement and uniqueness of the design.Form Reflects Function: Emphasizing silhouette and proportion helped convey both the machine’s functionality and its sci-fi aesthetic appeal.Pop Culture as a Design Lens: Leveraging a well-known universe like Evangelion offered a creative framework, but required balance between fan recognition and original design interpretation.

Sketching

The sketching phase began with exploratory ideation, focusing on how to merge the iconic aesthetics of Evangelion with the functional form of a traditional arcade machine. Initial sketches explored silhouettes inspired by the series’ mechas and interface visuals, emphasizing bold geometry, angular lines, and dramatic proportions. Special attention was given to maintaining ergonomic considerations for players, while ensuring the machine stood out visually in a crowded arcade environment.

This project concluded with the successful development of a scaled prototype that captured the visual identity and essence of the Evangelion universe, translated into a functional arcade machine concept of the acclaimed character 'Eva-01'. The use of modeling clay and airbrushing techniques brought the design to life, allowing for a tangible representation of the final product. This project taught me how storytelling and design can merge to create immersive user experiences, and strengthened my ability to develop themed physical products with both emotional and functional value.
